The Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) assembly with reference numbers 30400-16020, 30400-12510, and 30400-12740 is designed for the Aisin K120 Direct Shift-CVT. This revolutionary transverse front-wheel-drive unit features a physical Launch Gear combined with a traditional steel belt and pulley system. Specifically calibrated for Toyota's 2.0L Dynamic Force (M20A-FKS) engine, it eliminates the traditional "CVT rubber-band feel" and provides direct, gear-like acceleration for the Toyota RAV4, Corolla, Lexus UX 200, and select global Camry models.

Quick Specifications:

  • Part Numbers: 30400-16020 / 30400-12510 / 30400-12740 (Toyota OEM format)
  • Transmission Model: K120 (Direct Shift-CVT)
  • Type: CVT with Physical Launch Gear (10-Speed Sequential Shiftmatic)
  • Configuration: Transverse Front-Wheel Drive (FWD)
  • Engine Compatibility: 2.0L Inline-4 (M20A-FKS) Dynamic Force Engine
  • Max Input Torque: ~200-210 Nm
  • Fluid Type: Toyota CVTF L / CVTF FE (Direct Shift-CVT Specific)
  • Fluid Capacity: ~7.0 - 7.8 Liters (dry fill)

Applications:

  • Toyota RAV4 (XA50, 2019-present, 2.0L FWD variants)
  • Toyota Corolla / Corolla Cross (E210 / XG10, 2018-present, 2.0L FWD variants)
  • Lexus UX 200 (2019-2023, 2.0L FWD variants)
  • Toyota Camry (Select global markets featuring the 2.0L Dynamic Force FWD powertrain)
  • Toyota C-HR / Harrier (Select 2.0L FWD variants)
  • Toyota Corolla Hatchback / Touring Sports (2.0L FWD variants)

Complete Assembly Includes:

✅ Aluminum transmission case with integrated physical Launch Gear set
✅ High-tensile steel push-belt and narrowed, high-speed primary/secondary pulleys
✅ Torque converter with multi-plate lock-up clutch and gear-switching mechanism
✅ Advanced valve body with high-response linear solenoids for gear/belt transition
✅ Integrated Transmission Control Module (TCM) or external ECU interface
✅ Input/Output speed sensors, range selector, and differential assembly
✅ Sealing gaskets, O-rings, and fluid strainer
Note: Transmission mounts, shift cables, axles, and external cooler lines may need to be transferred from the original unit.

Key Features:

Physical Launch Gear: Uses a traditional mechanical gear for 1st gear (launching from a stop). This provides immediate, direct acceleration like a manual transmission and completely removes the high-torque load from the steel belt during launch, drastically reducing the risk of belt slip.
Seamless Gear-to-Belt Transition: At moderate speeds, the multi-plate clutch disengages the launch gear and seamlessly transfers power to the CVT pulley system for smooth, stepless cruising.
Narrowed Pulley Angle: Because the launch gear handles the heavy low-speed torque, the pulley angle is narrowed by 20%. This allows the pulleys to change ratios much faster, resulting in shift speeds that rival traditional geared automatics.
10-Speed Sequential Shiftmatic: Simulates 10 distinct gear ratios in manual mode, providing an engaging and sporty driving experience.
Compact & Lightweight: The entire Direct Shift-CVT system is physically smaller and lighter than previous generation CVTs, improving overall vehicle weight distribution and fuel economy.

Technical Notes:

Critical Installation Requirements:
  • Fluid Specification: Must use Toyota CVTF L (or region-specific CVTF FE designated for Direct Shift-CVT) exclusively. The Direct Shift-CVT requires highly specific friction modifiers to handle the multi-plate clutch transitions between the gear and the belt. Using standard ATF or older CVTF will destroy the clutch packs and pulleys.
  • Fluid Level Check: Must be performed with the transmission at a specific operating temperature (typically 35°C–45°C for the initial check, monitored via OBD2) and the engine idling, using the overflow check plug.
  • ECU/TCM Calibration: After installation, a "CVT Initialization," "Gear/Belt Clutch Learn," and "Idle Learn" procedure must be performed using Toyota Techstream or equivalent diagnostic tools. This is critical to ensure smooth transitions between the physical gear and the steel belt.
  • Cooler Flushing: The transmission cooler (integrated into the radiator) and external lines must be thoroughly flushed to remove metallic debris from the failed unit.
Common Issues & Maintenance:
  • Gear-to-Belt Transition Shudder: If the fluid degrades or the TCM adaptives are lost, drivers may feel a slight clunk or shudder when the transmission switches from the Launch Gear to the CVT belt at around 20-30 km/h. A fluid exchange and Techstream recalibration usually resolves this.
  • Launch Gear Bearing Wear: While the gear set is robust, the bearings supporting the launch gear can wear over very high mileage, producing a distinct whine during initial acceleration (before the belt takes over).
  • Valve Body Sensitivity: The precision linear solenoids controlling the gear/belt clutch are highly sensitive to fluid contamination. Regular fluid changes are mandatory.
  • Fluid Service Intervals: A drain and fill with genuine Toyota CVTF L / FE every 40,000–60,000 km is absolutely critical to maintain the health of the multi-plate transition clutch and the push-belt.
